Ubisoft notes that they will “keep adding to our cast of Defiants as the game evolves, drawing on a range of characters and abilities from the Clancy universe and beyond.” Abilities, weapon customisation and skins in XDefiantĮach faction will have its own set of passive traits, ‘ultra’ abilities, and “the freedom to choose from a number of different abilities” according to producer Kim Weigend. The Cleaners will be a “high DPS assault class”, while Echelon will be a support-based faction, which will be all about “hiding information from the enemies and giving more information to teammates”. The Wolves will be a tank class with higher health than other factions and “abilities that are shield based”. Producer Kim Weigend has stated that the factions bring class-based gameplay. Finally, Echelon is a group from the Splinter Cell series. DedSec are from Watch Dogs, and Libertad are from Far Cry. The Cleaners are from The Division, while The Phantoms are from Ghost Recon. These five factions will be familiar to many fans of the Tom Clancy franchise.

In March 2022, the game was rebranded as a part of the Ubisoft Originals brand, dropping the Tom Clancy's universe title, and is expected to feature characters from other Ubisoft franchises. A closed beta test began on 13 April and ended on 23 April. A second Insider test was held in February 2023. A closed Insider test of a pre-alpha version of XDefiant occurred in North America in 2021.
The game was officially announced by Ubisoft in July 2021. It has 6-versus-6 linear game modes (such as "Domination" and "Escort"). Defiants are customizable with traits, abilities, devices, weapons and items. Factions from Far Cry and Watch Dogs ( DedSec) are also planned. The setting of the game revolves around factions called "Defiant", Wolves (from Ghost Recon), Echelon (from Splinter Cell), and the Outcasts and Cleaners (from The Division). The game is set in a near-future version of the United States, where players engage in fast-paced, team-based multiplayer matches across a variety of maps and game modes.
It features a variety of factions and classes, each with their own unique abilities and weapons. On PC, the game will be released exclusively on Ubisoft Connect.
